This documentary screening and panel discussion kicks off a long-term public humanities collaboration between the Sheridan Libraries and Baltimore’s ballroom community, a black GLBT performance subculture with a vibrant history stretching back to the 1970s. A series of film screenings, panel discussions, dance workshops, oral history interviews, and online offerings will culminate in an epic ball competition at the Peabody Library in April 2019. Participants will interpret the Library collections through costume and stylized performance. The project brings together two storied Baltimore cultural institutions in an effort to foster innovative community/university partnerships and develop new artistic collaborations.
Speakers from Baltimore’s ballroom community include:
Legendary Deandré Balenciaga
Legendary Mook Mizrahi
Legendary Lil James West
Icon Uncle Mike Ebony
