I know you love MSEL and the BLC. I know you think of these places as part of your living space and spend oodles of time here. But I (and librarians across the nation) urge you to keep track of your belongings!
JHU Campus Safety and Security recently started sending out Daily Incident Reports via email. The Dec 3 – Dec 4 report included this:
“Theft – MSE Library, M-Level – On Dec. 3rd at 5:00 PM, a student left a shoulder bag, laptop and pencil box unattended on the desk at a cubicle. The student returned to the cubicle at 11:30 PM and discovered the property was gone. Investigation continuing.”
And in a nightly report filed on Dec. 3d, one of our staff reported this:
“6:30 pm: M-Copy Center: Abandoned mac laptop found on table (soft white carrier underneath). Brought to Circulation, entered in Lost & Found log & called for Security officer to pick up.”
I know I sound like your mom, but don’t leave your belongings unattended. It frustrates students looking for study space and tempts others to ‘shop’ while they’re in the library. Believe me, people take advantage of the high level of distraction during reading and exam period.
The library offers a few ways to help you keep your belongings safe if you can’t take them with you.
- There are lockers in the BLC and MSEL you can use.
- We have laptop locks available at the Circulation Desk.
Good luck on finals! Happy Holidays! And don’t leave your belongings in the library!
