The central index to scholarly journals in the field of art history – The Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) – is being discontinued by the Getty Research Institute effective March 31st. This will make art historical research more difficult, but not impossible! Fortunately, many important scholarly journals currently in BHA are also covered by other library resources:
We also have the printed version of BHA up to 1999 in the library: Eisenhower Stacks, N 20.B55.
Unfortunately, articles in esoteric and interdisciplinary journals – something BHA indexed very well – will be more difficult to find. You may need to find these references in:
- Indexes in related fields of study, such as Medieval & Renaissance Studies, History, and History of Science
- More general databases, like Arts & Humanities Citation Index and Humanities Full-Text
- Google Scholar – a great tool for bibliography-hopping
Please consult the Art History Research Guide when beginning your research. And, always feel free to ask a librarian for assistance!
