Thanks for this post. Talking about Scandinavian noir, I read with pleasure a few books by Arnaldur Indriðason. We seem to have only one in MSEL (https://catalyst.library.jhu.edu/multi_search?commit=search&q=indridason%2C+arnaldur&search_field=author). I wonder if any of his works has been adapted into a movie. I think his detective Erlendur stories would fit the category of Scandinavian noir!

As a student, I see this contest every year, but this year the winner’s selections were bland, unimaginative, and offered nothing new.

Small world story. As a college intern, my husband helped plan the opening of Toledo OH’s Harborplace, another Rouse initiative. That development was not as successful as Baltimore’s.

Ray – The collection is still mostly intact. There were 1800 titles in the original gift and only about 115 are either missing or unable to be identified as having come from Kennedy. That’s not a bad percentage given the institutional changes that occured over the history of the Peabody Library.

Thanks Amy and David-interesing tidbit. Do you know how many books remained in the original donation of Kennedy? Was this a collection that remained fairly intact?

What’s the story behind the Honda advertisement taped to the BLC steps earlier this week?

Is this an innovative new way to fund the expensive BLC?

Does the university have policies about commercial advertisements on campus like this?

The Sheridan Libraries and Homewood Design & Construction approved the request for the advertisement. It was not posted to receive funds for the BLC.

Speaking of the Orioles opener in 1954, a local boy attended the parade and later pitched for the Orioles, including pitching a no-hitter. He was Tom Phoebus who lived in the Little Italy neighborhood of Remington.

And let’s not forget that Purple Rose of Cairo (an excellent evocation of the 1930s and its B cinema) suggests that it may be unwise to mistake what we see on the screen with what we commonly refer to as “real life” (unless you’re Martin Scorsese).
