Mystery writer Laura Lippman has become one of Baltimore’s favorite daughters. Her Tess Monaghan series details the life of a private investigator (and former reporter) who loves Baltimore for all its quirks. A colleague of mine once told me that when she moved to Baltimore, reading Lippman made her love the city too.

And if you like seeing familiar places pop up in books, check out some of Lippman’s Johns Hopkins referencesBy a Spider’s Thread even features a wedding at the George Peabody Library. Her non-series books are equally full of Baltimore and Maryland lore, although they have been darker than the Tess books.

Lippman will be reading from her latest book, I’d Know You Anywhere, and signing copies at the Johns Hopkins Barnes & Noble on Tuesday, September 7, at 7 pm.
